A community-rooted nonprofit reconnecting families and teens of all genders through trusted babysitting, mentorship, and the simple magic of knowing your neighbor.

Our Story

The Future Sitter’s Club was born out of a simple idea: what if babysitting felt like it used to?

Back when families knew each other.
Back when the neighborhood teen was the one you called.
Back when parents felt safe asking for help, and teens were proud to offer it.

Today, that trust and connection feel harder to come by. But we believe we can bring it back-stronger and safer than ever.

We created this program to give teens the support they need to step confidently into their role as sitters and "village helpers." Through a mix of casual training, mentorship, and good old-fashioned experience, they learn how to show up for their neighbors with heart, responsibility, and care.

And for families? It means having a go-to sitter they actually know and trust. Someone who lives nearby. Someone they can count on. Someone who makes parenting feel just a little bit lighter.

This isn’t just about childcare. It’s about building a community our kids can grow up in... and feel held by.

Our Core Values

Trust

We believe trust is built through presence, honesty, and follow-through. That means showing up when we say we will, communicating openly, and doing our best every time. When families and teens know they can count on each other, our whole community becomes stronger and safer.

Heart

We lead with kindness, patience, and care. Whether we’re comforting a crying baby, playing tag with a preschooler, or chatting with a stressed parent, we believe that heart-led care leaves a lasting impact. It's not about being perfect, it's about being present and compassionate.

Connection

This is more than a program. It’s a movement toward knowing our neighbors again. We create opportunities for teens and families to form real relationships that go beyond just “hiring a sitter.” By bridging generations and bringing people together, we make space for community to grow.

Growth

We all start somewhere, and we don’t expect anyone to have it all figured out. Our program gives teens the chance to learn at their own pace with plenty of support and encouragement. Every challenge is a chance to grow, and we’re here to cheer each other on through it all.

Belonging

Everyone deserves to feel welcome, safe, and valued. We honor every person’s background, family makeup, and lived experience. Whether you're a teen just starting out or a parent looking for support, you’re not just accepted here. You’re embraced.

Meet the Founders

Teresa Thurmond-President

I’ve been in childcare for 13 years, starting as a teen nanny and spending over a decade in the field before transitioning to birth work. Now, as a full-spectrum doula and newborn care specialist, I mostly care for newborns—but my passion for mentorship led me to create The Future Sitter’s Club. Through my own experience, I’ve seen firsthand how early training and mentorship can shape confident, capable caregivers. As president, I want to give teens the resources I wish I had, helping them gain confidence, skills, and experience in childcare. I believe that with the right support, teens can gain not just babysitting experience, but a real foundation for a future in professional childcare—or wherever their path may lead. I’m so excited to see this program grow and bring the community closer together!

I’ve been working in childcare for 36 years—starting as a neighborhood babysitter, then nannying through college, and later running a licensed in-home childcare business when my now-grown kids were little. These days, I nanny for a family with three children under five. Over the years, friends have often asked me where teens can get hands-on babysitting experience, but I never had a great answer—until I learned about The Future Sitter’s Club. I was so excited to see someone finally creating the kind of program our community has needed, and I knew I wanted to be involved. I joined as the treasurer and have been helping shape the curriculum ever since. I hope teens come away from this program excited about the new skills they have learned, confident in their abilities, and having fun while doing it.
